This video shows us how to build a garden bench out of cinder blocks.

Before you get started, you need to refer to the How To sheet #320 for all your materials and make sure you have everything you need.

Determine the location for the bench and lay out the first course (or layer) of blocks for the first post to determine where to dig the trench.

Then use a measuring tape to determine the length of your bench and where to place the second post. Use a shovel to cut around the blocks, marking the area where the grass and soil will be removed to construct the base of the bench. Dig out the grass and soil in the area approximately 24" square and 4" deep.

Next, install the foundation pad in the trench by placing a crushed rock layer first, until it is even with the top of the trench. Then level using a hand compactor. Once compacted, check to make sure the foundation pad is level.

Start with the first post by placing the base bricks in the designated pattern. Align the post and check levels from side to side and front to back. Make adjustments as needed. Do the same for the second post.

Then use a straight board and a level to span across both posts to make sure they are level with each other. Build the second post following the same pattern of brick. Repeat the steps for each layer, or course.

On the third layer, make the course pattern a bit smaller and flush with the outside. Repeat smaller pattern for the top course. Finish the top with 2 post caps.

Then slide seat into place and you are ready to relax and enjoy your new bench.
